Third annual PridErie picnic is at Presque Isle

Bridges, the publishers of the Erie Gay Community Newsletter, will be having their third annual PridErie potluck picnic on Saturday, June 11 from 2 pm until the park closes at sundown. Folks should bring a dish to share, a table setting and whatever else they feel like (but not alcohol, which is not permitted at state parks.) This will be a low-key, relaxed event. The park is not an exclusively gay setting.

The site will be cabin 3, which is near the Waterworks and Beach 6. This is on the side

of Presque Isle nearest Lake Erie on the right side as you drive in, rather than the Misery Bay side. The cabin does have electricity.

To get there: Take I-90 to exit 6, which is Route 832. Head north on 832. Route 832 becomes Peninsula Drive, and will go directly to Presque Isle. Look for signs for Waterworks, Beach 6 and cross the median. Of the three cabins, the picnic is at the one closest to the entrance. ♡

Falsettos to premiere at Erie Playhouse

No, Erie in not the "mistake by the lake.” No, Erie is not just a "beer and bowling town." Erie gets a bad rap for weather and attitude, but don't ask the Erie Playhouse to support that complaint.

The Erie Playhouse, now in their 78th year, is regarded nationally as one of the very best of community theaters. Producing an average of 20 shows a year (an unheard of amount even for a professional theater) the Playhouse has garnered the reputation of presenting a wide menu of productions. Now, the Playhouse launches out in uncharted waters as they become one of the first community theaters in the nation to produce the phenomenal Falsettos. This Tony Award winning musical tells the story of a man who leaves his wife and child for a male lover. Not so surprisingly, the musical has captured the hearts of many gay men who have gone through the same life-altering situation.

Where many community theaters would not touch the subject of homosexuality, the Playhouse has embraced it. A few years back they presented a production of Bent (about Nazi persecution of gay men) that won the award as the state's best production and placed the Erie Playhouse as one of the 10 best community theaters in the nation.

Bent was followed by a phenomenal production of Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart... and all of these were presented in seasons that included "mainstream" community theater fare.

Falsettos is a beautiful evening in the theater. Beginning in 1979, we follow the exploits of Marvin. Although he loved Trina when he married her and indeed fathered a wonderful boy named Jason, he has left his family for his beautiful male lover Whizzer. His psychiatrist is now married to his former wife and Marvin's life is convoluted and involved. The brilliance of the piece is that none of the people involved are perfect. They have their faults and their glories. Act II begins in 1981, Jason is ready to have his bar mitzvah and life has been complicated by the newly discovered killer AIDS which eventually does come into the lives of the cast. Marvin now has a wonderful lesbian couple, a doctor and a culinary master, as next door neighbors.

By the end of Falsettos, the audience has been moved and touched and for those who may not have realized it, a lesson has been learned. Love is love... be it straight or gay... and love is truly life's most wonderful gift.

The Erie Playhouse production is being presented at the air-conditioned Mercyhurst College Little Theatre and is easily found with directions from the Playhouse box office.

Performances have been scheduled for: Thursday, June 9 through Saturday, June 11 at 8 pm; Sunday, June 12 at 3 pm; Wednesday, June 15 through Friday, June 17 at 8 pm; Saturday, June 18 at 5 and 9 pm.

All seats are $10 and reservations can be made by phoning the Playhouse weekdays 9:00-4:30 and Saturdays 9 am-2 pm at 814454-2852. Seating is limited so reservations are urged.
